  • Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization founded in July 1990 when a Miami student was recognized at the Miami Police Department for turning in a loaded gun he found at his school.
  • Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. recognizes and rewards children in our community for positive behavior, accomplishments and/or actions.
  • Since its inception, Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. has directly impacted over 125,000 students in over 300 schools in Miami-Dade County.
  • Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. distributes 500 – 1,000 Do The Right Thing T-shirts, personalized Certificates of Recognition and letters of congratulations from the Chief of Police every month during the school year to each student nominated for “doing the right thing.”
  • Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. holds a monthly awards ceremony in the lobby of the Miami Police Department to honor the 10 top winners with savings bonds, plaques, Do The Right Thing T-shirts, passes to area attractions and recognition on NBC 6 and in The Miami Herald.
  • One top middle or high school “Special Recognition” winner every month wins a trip to London, England courtesy of British Airways. One top elementary school “Special Recognition” winner every month wins a trip to Disney World. The Do The Right Thing Program escorts  these  winners along with police chaperones as a group each fall.
  • The Do The Right Thing Program also hosts an array of crime prevention activities throughout the year including a Teen Leadership Seminar, crime prevention contest with Miami-Dade County Schools and crime prevention rallies and picnics in underprivileged areas.
  • Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. is funded, in part, by forfeiture funds donated by the Miami Police  Department as well as private donations from corporations, foundations and philanthropists around the community.
  • Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. was so successful, other law enforcement agencies around the United States and abroad expressed interest in starting their own chapters.
  • Do The Right Thing, Inc., the national umbrella of Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc., was formed in 1993. National training materials were developed and the program now markets itself on a national level to other law enforcement agencies.
  • The Cape Coral (FL) Police Department became the first national Do The Right Thing chapter in February 1995.
  • The Miami Police Department now houses the international headquarters of Do The Right Thing, Inc.
  • Since 1995, Do The Right Thing, Inc. has grown to 51 chapters around the United States, one chapter in London, England and one chapter in Winsen/ Luhe, Germany.
