Maria Debourg
Twelfth Grade, Ronald Regan Doral Senior High
Maria has overcome numerous challenges in her life and her
resilience and determination to overcome are admirable. From a very young age, Maria faced bullying due to personal issues. She finally took charge and confronted her bullies with their parents, the school principal, and even the police at the age of thirteen. This experience taught Maria that she can achieve anything she wants as long as she is brave and never gives up. After moving to the United States, Maria struggled with mental health issues and the COVID-19 pandemic only worsened her situation. However, Maria made a conscious decision to
take control of her life and began taking steps to challenge herself, follow her passions, and make healthy friendships. With time, Maria’s academic performance improved and she discovered her love for painting, dance, psychology and her passion for singing was reignited. Maria’s determination to overcome challenges such as bullying, depression, anxiety, and trust issues demonstrate that you can overcome anything as long as you never give up.
