Roxana Iglesias
Eighth Grade, Hialeah Gardens Middle
Washington, D.C. Trip Winner
Recently, one of Roxana’s classmates had run away and a search was underway to find her with no luck. Over 10 students’ names were provided as close friends of the young lady that was missing but no one provided any meaningful assistance until they reached Roxana. Although Roxana wasn’t very close to the young lady, she was concerned and knew she needed to help. Roxana began messaging the girl and asking her if she was okay, how she could help, and informing her that her family was worried and that the police were looking for her. The young lady was scared and did not want to cooperate. With the assistance of Hialeah Gardens police and the student’s parents, Roxana was able to convince the young lady to let them get her and
come home. The young lady in question was in serious distress and has a history of mental health struggles and self-harm. Immediate action was taken to assist the young lady and secure her safety, thanks to Roxana’s assistance. Although Roxana received backlash from some friends who harbored the student when she ran away, she knows that she did the right thing in helping bring her friend to safety and is ultimately responsible for saving her life.
