Audrey Rubin-Babiarz

Eighth Grade, Vineland K-8 Center

Audrey demonstrated exceptional courage, compassion, and selflessness during a recent cross-country meet. While most student athletes focus on their performance and personal bests during competition, Audrey demonstrated that true character is measured not only by speed and endurance, but also by one’s willingness to place the well-being of others above personal achievement. A mile into her race, Audrey encountered an opposing team member lying unconscious on the course. Without hesitation, she stopped running, forfeiting her own chance of winning, and immediately turned her attention to the student in need. She checked on the competitor, attempted to wake her, and recognized the seriousness of the situation. Understanding that time was critical, Audrey quickly acted by signaling another runner to remain with the unconscious student while she sprinted back to the starting gate for help. She then guided the medical assistant to the exact location, ensuring that the student received immediate and appropriate medical care. Audrey’s actions exemplify integrity, leadership, and empathy; qualities that extend far beyond athletics. Her selfless actions serve as a powerful reminder that victories are not only measured by medals or finish times, but by the positive impact we leave on others’ lives.
