Melanie Alvarez

Seventh Grade, Hialeah Gardens Middle
Washington, D.C. Trip Winner

Melanie demonstrated exceptional compassion, maturity, and leadership in two separate, life-threatening situations. Her quick thinking and willingness to act have made a profound difference in the lives of her peers. Recently, while assisting a teacher, Melanie noticed a classmate in distress who revealed her arm which showed multiple marks consistent with self-harm. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Melanie immediately requested to see a counselor and reported her concerns. Thanks to her swift action, immediate interventions were put in place to support the student and ensure her safety. Just a few days later, on an early morning before school, Melanie was approached by another classmate who was experiencing a mental health crisis leading to an urgent medical emergency. Without hesitation, Melanie encouraged her to seek help and personally escorted her to the office, ensuring that a counselor spoke with her right away. Life-saving interventions were implemented and the student was taken to the hospital to recover. Melanie is a true hero and due to her courage and quick thinking, a life was saved.
