Liam Ortiz

During a recent school lockdown Liam and Lucas demonstrated extraordinary courage, leadership, and compassion. While out on the field for recess, they and their classmates suddenly heard gunshots nearby and were alerted that the school was going into lockdown. Following safety procedures, teachers directed students to move away from the school building and take cover off campus. In the midst of fear and confusion, Liam and Lucas noticed that their classmates were struggling to climb a fence to find safety. Despite being scared themselves, these two boys chose not to run or hide right away. Instead, they worked together to break a section of the fence and move branches out of the way to help their peers climb over more quickly and safely. Their selfless actions helped several classmates reach safety faster and showed tremendous bravery and teamwork during a frightening situation. Lucas and Liam are true heroes who exemplified leadership, courage, and compassion during a moment of crisis.
