Andres Betancourt

Eleventh Grade, Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Senior High

On March 5th as Andres and Enoc were on a school bus returning from a college tour with their school, they immediately noticed something was wrong with a fellow student on the bus and quickly realized the student was having a seizure. Thanks to their experience as part of the City of Miami Police Explorers Post 122, they immediately jumped into action and took charge. Andres got on the phone and called 911 and directed another student to alert administration. Meanwhile, Enoc calmly and gently guided the student to lay down to prevent her from falling. They made sure to turn the student to the side in a recovery position to keep the airway clear and directed their peers to move back to give her space. Andres stayed on the phone with 911, gave them the location of the bus, and provided information to the best of his ability. Once the bus arrived at the school shortly thereafter, fire rescue arrived and provided the student with immediate medical attention. In a stressful situation, where most students would be fearful or panicked, Andres and Enoc demonstrated the true leaders they are, not just as Police Explorers, but on an everyday basis.
