• Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization founded in July 1990 when a Miami student was recognized at the Miami Police Department for turning in a loaded gun he found at his school.
• Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. recognizes and rewards children in our community for positive behavior, accomplishments, and/or actions in conjunction with local law enforcement.
• Since its inception, Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. has directly impacted over 270,000 of students in over 460 schools in Miami-Dade County.
• Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. distributes 500 – 1,000 Do The Right Thing T-shirts, free pizza certificates, bumper stickers, personalized certificates of recognition, and letters of congratulations from the City of Miami chief of police every month during the school year to each student nominated for “doing the right thing.”
• Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. holds a monthly awards ceremony at the Miami Police Academy auditorium to honor the 10 top winners with mini tablets, plaques, gift cards, Do The Right Thing T-shirts, free pizza certificates, letters from Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, and passes to area attractions.
• One top middle or high school “Special Recognition” winner every month wins a trip to Washington, D.C. One top elementary school “Special Recognition” winner every month wins four tickets to Rapids Water Park.
• The Do The Right Thing Program also hosts other activities/initiatives throughout the year including the Officer Do Right initiative, the “Back Without A Bang!” Youth Rally Against Violence, the DTRT Coordinator Appreciation Luncheon, the Summer Salute Awards Night, an on-field recognition ceremony with the Miami Marlins, and a scholarship awarded to one high school senior each year to attend the Miami Police Academy.
• Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. is funded, in part, by the Miami Police Department as well as other Miami-Dade law enforcement agencies. Additional support is sought from private donations including corporations, foundations, and philanthropists around the community.
• Do The Right Thing, Inc., the national umbrella of Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc., was formed in 1993. National training materials were developed and the program now markets itself on a national level to other law enforcement agencies.
• Do The Right Thing of Miami, Inc. was so successful, that other law enforcement agencies around the United States and abroad expressed interest in starting their own chapters.
• The Miami Police Department houses the international headquarters of Do The Right Thing, Inc.
• The Cape Coral (FL) Police/Fire Department became the first national Do The Right Thing chapter in February 1995.
• Since 1995, Do The Right Thing, Inc. has grown to 63 chapters around the United States, one chapter in London, England and three chapters in Germany.
