Alyssa Gonzalez

Eighth Grade, Hialeah Gardens Middle

Alyssa demonstrated extraordinary courage, compassion, and maturity when she came forward seeking guidance about how to help a friend in crisis despite the situation being complex, frightening, and emotionally overwhelming. Alyssa shared that an online friend had confided in her about wanting to harm themselves following experiences of sexual abuse, trafficking, physical abuse, and multiple hospitalizations related to mental health concerns. Despite being scared, unsure, and concerned about breaking her friend’s trust, Alyssa understood the importance of safety and the seriousness of what her friend revealed. Because Alyssa chose to speak up, a subsequent investigation confirmed her friend’s identity and address which led the proper authorities to intervene. Due to the severity of the matter, multiple law enforcement agencies and the Department of Children and Families became involved. After a thorough investigation, it was confirmed that the student was safe. This outcome would not have been possible without Alyssa’s bravery and willingness to act. Her decision represents the very essence of see something, say something. Beyond this situation, Alyssa is an Honor Roll student who loves drawing, coding, baking, and creating pillows for her dog, Rosie. She is a student who acts with integrity, compassion, and courage even when the situation is uncomfortable, reflecting the very spirit of doing the right thing.
