Joel Archer
Twelfth Grade, Young Men's Preparatory Academy
Joel found himself in a difficult situation when he overheard a 6th grade student expressing suicidal thoughts. Without hesitation, he immediately contacted his counselor to report that the student confessed to having plans to shoot himself. Despite his uncertainty about reporting the classmate, Joel knew he had to speak up and report the concerning behavior. Thanks to Joel’s quick thinking, the appropriate measures were taken to ensure the student’s safety and a life was saved. His story reminds us of the importance of speaking up if we suspect someone is in danger, even if it is uncomfortable or difficult. Joel is not only an excellent student, ranking second in his graduating class and securing admission to FSU with a partial scholarship, but he also actively contributes to his community by volunteering with his church to help feed and clothe the homeless. Joel is a true hero and an inspiration to all.
