Kathryn Segura

Twelfth Grade, Advanced Studies West Campus

Kathryn has been tutoring the children of migrant families for the past 6 months at Redlands Migrant Camp. She also has worked to organize and hold fundraisers, such as food and toy drives, helping bring awareness to the struggles migrant families face. She takes great satisfaction in building hope in the migrant kids and encourages them to push past barriers to succeed beyond any limits. Kathryn believes that no dream is ever too big, and she leads by example, proving that if she can do it coming from a family that had to leave everything behind and face countless hardship starting anew, they can also strive to achieve the same. Kathryn’s biggest inspiration in taking on this service role was her own grandparents, electrical engineers for big organizations in Colombia, who were forced to escape the violence and seek refuge in the United States of America. They left everything they knew behind and were forced to start anew in a new country with nothing but the clothes on their backs. In order to easily adjust to this new life, her grandparents had to take on multiple jobs as janitors and restaurant waiters, working day and night at minimum wage, while raising 3 small children. They did not know any English nor were they able to get a proper American education, yet they managed to persevere and work tremendously hard to be successful in life. It is this same resilience and perseverance that Kathryn attempts to instill in the migrant children at the Redlands Christian Migrant Association. It is her hope that with her own family’s story, she is able to motivate others to overcome the obstacles and succeed come what may.
