Nathaly Reyes

Fifth Grade, Kendale Lakes Elementary

Recently during breakfast, Nathaly, while on safety patrol duties, noticed a fellow classmate looking very shaken and distraught in the cafeteria. The student was experiencing a severe panic attack and could not physically move, speak, or seek help. Noticing her classmate in this state, Nathaly was very concerned and approached the student to try to assist. Because her classmate remained in this state and was not able to speak, Nathaly looked to an adult nearby for help. Nathaly assisted administration with walking the young lady to the clinic to provide her a safe space to settle down. The student shared that she was experiencing anxiety, something she suffers from, and that she also takes medication for this condition. Due to her symptoms, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called to further assist and additional resources were provided to assist the student. Nathaly not only followed the “See something, say something” campaign, but she also did a great job of assessing an emergency situation and immediately looking for adult guidance. She displayed tremendous maturity, compassion, and courage and her actions demonstrated how being kind to others matters.
