Sheyla Cordova-Sierra
Twelfth Grade, Booker T. Washington Senior High
Sheyla is a senior who loves to give back to her community. Growing up in the Overtown area and seeing the poverty and homelessness in the surrounding neighborhood can be heartbreaking and difficult. However, this student has found a way to bring smiles to the faces of those less fortunate, expectant mothers. As a member of the Key Club, Sheyla took the lead and organized the collection of essential baby items at her school and was able to put together 15 baby shower baskets which were donated to the Children’s Home of South Florida. In addition, Sheyla is a member of the National Honor Society, where she collected toys to donate to Frederick Douglass Elementary School. She is also a member of the Health Information Project, where she serves as the Vice-President and presents a variety of proactive and preventive health information concepts to her peers to promote a lifestyle of wellness. She not only cares for her community but is also an excellent student, taking Dual Enrollment Courses to prepare for her future. In addition to her academic success and community service, she also helps tutor at the Overtown Youth Center. Sheyla demonstrates strong leadership skills, empathy, dedication, and an overall joy to be able to do the right thing and serve her community.
