Sophia Calderon

Eighth Grade, Sunny Isles Beach

Sophia came up with an idea to address pedestrian safety in her city due to a concern over dangerous intersections with high traffic that she and others feel unsafe crossing. This idea then evolved into addressing the bill proposed to honor Anthony Reznik, a former 6th grade student who was killed by a distracted driver as he crossed the street. Sophia led the efforts of her law class to pursue this topic and invited law enforcement and the city’s mayor to speak to the class and revise the bill in honor of Anthony so that it can be re-introduced to the Florida congress in the next session. One of the action plan steps was to make a video that could go viral demonstrating how to safely cross the streets so that pedestrians protect themselves against dangerous driving. Sophia directed the video with the help of her classmates and to date the video has almost 33,000 views. In the future, Sophia wants to be a lawyer to help advocate for others. Sophia is a natural leader and remains enthusiastic about making a difference in our community.
